Julio's file was not VRML 2, as I suggested earlier is the appropriate version of VRML to use from Solidworks to Strata.
Julio, try again, but use VRML 2 or VRML 97. Solidworks should offer one of the latter. VRML 2 and VRML 97 are more-or-less the same thing. VRML 1 is quite a lot different, and does not work nearly as well for exchanging files with Strata.
Please avoid VRML 1.
If you are having someone else do the export for you, you need to be very explicit in asking for VRML 2 or 97, but NOT VRML 1. If you are doing the export yourself, look the options over carefully, and be sure you select the correct one.

Thanks Jean,
I am having some else export the file for me, I will ask them to exported it again. Question do you know if the VRML 2 or 97 will allow objects to be imported as individual object instead of one object. Like I mention before after I converted the model to obj or 3ds I was able to import the model to strata but I comes up as one object. I cannot access each object individually to apply texture, move, rotate..

When you Import a file into Strata, its contents are placed inside a Shape. Double-clicking that Shape will open it up so you can access its components.

Erick,
I have a clients that sends me Solidworks as well. They are very good clients so I bit the bullet and bought Polytrans with the CAD plugin package from Okino.
Convert (translate) and export .obj files out of Polytrans and take those into Strata CX. Materials will follow.
Works very well.

Hi Julio, I'm really glad I got to look at your file.
I import VRML 2 files all day long, many days a week. They always come in as separate objects, but you do have to go back a level to find the individual objects if you use the 'Import' command, just as Brian describes.
If you 'open' the file directly, you should see separate objects.
I use ViaCAD instead of solidWorks, but Leif Buckley uses SolidWorks, he and I went through this and figured it all out, it just works.
I can think of two reasons you might need or want to buy PolyTrans.
One: even though you ask your client for VRML 2, they keep goofing up and send you VRML 1 anyway.
Two: Strata imports multiple instances of the same material each time it sees it in a VRML 2 file. This might also drive you away from direct imports of VRML 2.
BUT!! the folks in this thread seem to think VRML 2 does not import well, and that simply is not accurate.
I take a different route with CAD files from my clients, whether they use SolidWorks or Pro/E or something else.. I ask for STEP files, STEP being a universal CAD exchange format. I then open the STEP files in ViaCAD, which costs less than $100. Then I do my own tesselations and export to VRML 2. I slightly prefer OBJ when it is available, but it is not necessary.

VRML 2 does work very well for me as well. Unfortunatlly, for whatever reason, they won't save me in that format. Also, after spending big bucks on Poly Trans I certainly like the price of ViaCAD! I do like the multitude of import-export options in PT. though. Is ViaCAD just as versatile? For Mac X too?.

PolyTrans supports more formats than ViaCAD. ViaCAD imports SAT, STEP, and IGES, DXF, which are very useful, but does not do native formats such as SolidWorks or Pro/E. So, you do have to rely upon your client to give you the format you ask for. Mine all do, but maybe I am lucky.
ViaCAD is cross-platform, so I have a great little tool that works well on my Macs. The best thing about ViaCAD is it is a modeler, not just a translator. But if you really need heavy translation capabilities, and have a Windows system, PolyTrans has other things to offer, and other arguments for purchasing it.
I opened Julio's VRML 1 file in AC3D, which is a little modeler that also does a lot of file formats, and exported it to VRML 2 and sent it to him. It opens just fine in strata.
ViaCAD Pro is a nicer modeler than viaCAD 2d-3d,but costs a lot more. It handles more formats. So far I've gotten along just fine with the $85 version I bought from Amazon.com.

Sounds like you made great choices in software. Great prices too.
My requesting certain formats gets a bit political. The in-house folks would like to do the job rather than have it sent out to me. You know.. keep their jobs! I completely understand their predicament, and hold no grudge. I comandeered my wifes XP machine to run PolyTrans. It will run in a emulator on a Mac. I think PolyTrans even does the old Studio Pro files! I haven't tried it yet.

well, I have a lot of inexpensive pieces of 3D software, a lot of what I do with some them is translation of files ;) I also use BodyPaint, so I have most things covered, but someday I may need PolyTrans. I have 2 Macs that will run Windows, so I'm covered if i ever get to that point. ;)
But ViacAD is amazingly useful for the price. I model in it quite a bit, too.

here's a screenshot showing the SolidWorks VRML export dialog, and the drop-down that you need to switch away from VRML 1.

I use vrml 97 to export out of Solidworks to Strata all the time. Works perfectly. You might be having a problem at the Solidworks end. Sometimes the file can be bugged even though it is not showing up in the history tree. Make sure your model doesn't have any missing faces as that is usually an indicator that the file is not quite right.
