For lack of a better word, might be termed 's blues album. Some of the songs are in the strict blues form, and the approach to the arrangements tends toward spare, acoustic elements. In his liner notes, cites as inspirations an invitation to participate in a tribute album and the offer to provide the soundtrack to a film set in the deep South in the 1940s and '50s.

But, of course, it's not that simple. Spare the arrangements may be, but they are also precise, especially in terms of the rhythms, in a way their models never were.

Is a stickler for grooves, and these tracks are carefully edited so that you never really imagine you're in a juke joint. The material ranges from 's 'Mama Talk to Your Daughter' and 's 'I Need Your Love So Bad' to more recent fare such as 's 'TV Dinners' and neo-bluesman 's 'Am I Wrong?' 's throaty voice and his urgent delivery are well-suited to the songs, and his usual taste for the Caribbean lightens things up just when the collection is beginning to seem harsh. The version of 'Hound Dog,' not surprisingly, owes more to than it does to ( gets the lyrics right, which never did). This is the blues filtered through a highly sophisticated sensibility, and thus rendered as an artifact, however fervently sings.

No crackling records or white noise here!A key instrument in this sort of music is of course the voice, and believe it or not Robert Palmer can sing the Blues. Right from the start, where his gutsy voice rips its way through Mama Talk to Your Daughter, it is clear that Palmer is not holding back on going for the full Blues vocal. And he pretty much pulls it off, with other great performances on TV Dinners, Hound Dog and Crazy Cajun Cake Walk Band.Further interpretations worth watching out for here are Who’s Fooling Who, Am I Wrong, I Need Your Love so Bad, and 29 Ways (To My Baby’s Door), but one to avoid is Stellar, the low point of Drive. Here Palmer takes the whole thing a little too far, trying to sing over the steel drums with a Caribbean voice – not a good idea.Despite Palmer’s ’80s pop image and the high production values on this album, Drive has a real sense of integrity and unity. In fact, if anything, the high production values help to re-illuminate some well-loved songs, and Palmer’s profile will help to introduce a wider audience to the joy of classic Blues.
