Oh, this is going to get confusing really fast. Over the past couple years, David Goyer and Justin Marks wrote drafts of a script called Super Max (or Supermax, as it is sometimes called, and more recently Green Arrow: Escape from Super Max) about the DC hero Green Arrow being trapped in a super-maximum security prison for super villains. Now Sony has bought a spec script called Supermax about…wait for it…a guard and a lethal inmate trying to survive in a maximum-security prison for super-natural inmates. Read More »

New news on Super Max has been a long time coming. The state of play was this: Justin Marks was scripting, David Goyer was producing, DC comics’ Green Arrow was the lead character and the plot would see him incarcerated in the tip-topper most high security prison in the DC universe, framed for a crime he didn’t commit.

There have been any number of rumors surrounding the project along the way. Would Matt Damon star as the Green Arrow? Would Kevin Smith direct? Would Lex Luthor, The Riddler or The Joker appear? It has generated a healthy bag full of headlines over a couple of years without actually going into production, or even pre-production. Nonetheless, slow and steady can often win the race and Super Max is still chugging along steadily. David Goyer has spoken to MTV and given an update. Here’s the man himself:

We’re working on that. We’re about to bring on another writer. Obviously, Warner Bros. is now heavily into mining all of the various DC properties.

Clerks filmmaker Kevin Smith has revealed that he may be doing a Comic Book movie after all. Smith, was originally attached to write and direct The Green Hornet, bowed out after fearing that he would not be able to handle a big budget action movie. Of course, Smith has already lined up his next two films over at The Weinstein Co: a romantic comedy titled Zack and Miri Make a Porno, followed by a horror film titled Red State. But after that, Smith says he might do a superhero flick.

“I think that by that point, by my 10th film, I’ll be ready to take on something that is very visually oriented,” Smith told Wizard. “The 10th movie I think is going to be a comic book movie – not “The Green Hornet,” though. There’s something that we’re kind of negotiating on right now which would actually be pretty cool. I don’t know what the audience for it would be, but I would dig making it because I’ve always been a fan of the character. I can’t say what it is though, because they haven’t locked it in.”

I wonder if the character in question could be Green Arrow.

UPDATE 8/9/07:Kevin Smith Responds to /Film: Not Directing SuperMax

As you may or may not know, David Goyer (Batman Begins, Blade, Dark City) has sold Warner Bros on making a movie based on the Green Arrow DC comics character. Super Max would follow a wrongly convicted Green Arrow as he is incarcerated in a super maxim security prison for out-of-control heroes and super villains. Arrow will come face to face with some of the people he put in the prison, while he attempts to make a prison break. Goyer has said that Arrow was chosen because of “his hard-hitting, moralistic tendencies, seemed like the most interesting hero to put through the institutional wringer.” The project was being worked on by newcomer Justin Marx.

Kevin wrote a 15 issue arc for the rebirth of the Green Arrow comic book series for DC Comics in 2000. So he would be a perfect choice to pick up such a project. The project also falls into Smith’s comment that “I don’t know what the audience for it would be,” as it’s a very unconventional superhero story, at least for the big screen (a similar story was recently done in the Daredevil comic book series). And Smith’s buddy Matt Damon has also been rumored [unsubstantiated] to be involved in the project. Super Max is also on track for a 2010 release, which would also fit into Smith’s schedule.

Or may-be it’s a completely unrelated superhero project that Smith is considering. Any ideas?

A couple days back we told you about David Goyer’s unconventional Green Arrow movie titled Super Max. We were intrigued by the concept of a superhero movie which takes place mainly in the confines of a super maxim security prison, where a hero must come face to face with the people he jailed. Sure it’s a copy of the classic Grant Morrison Batman graphic novel Arkham Asylum and the recent Daredevil series, but we’re all for it. Now Goyer has offered us more information on the project.

Speculates that director Peter Segal, currently attached to helm a Shazam feature for Warner Bros., might also be the man who brings the studio’s planned tentpole, Jonny Quest, to the world as well for Summer ’09.

Apparently the script by Dan Mazeau is quite strong and in better shooting condition than Billy Batson and the Legend of Shazam. Moroever, the site spoke to Segal recently, who was enthusiastic about the latest screenplay, noted his involvement with getting a Quest flick off the ground in the past, and even discussed casting preferences (The Rock for special agent Roger “Race” Bannon). As you might recall, for over a year now Dwayne Johnson has been attached to play Shazam‘s Black Adam.At the center of the Jonny Quest franchise is the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, about the titular young boy, his scientist father, his adopted Indian brother, a spastic bulldog, and a snowy haired special agent/bodyguard who hop around the globe pursuing epic cryptozoological and sci-fi adventures. Quest is one of several retro tentpole projects on Hollywood’s burner, including, Spielberg/Jackson’s Tintin, the now filming Transformers 2, and another live-action He-Man flick (also loudly at Warner Bros.). Of course, the recent wipe-out of the similarly cheeky/mothballed Speed Racer is no doubt being taken into consideration when updating Quest. Also of note: David Goyer‘s, which now looks to have broader box office potential after the success of Iron Man, has been retitled Green Arrow. The well-reviewed script, which sees Green Arrow facing off in a high security prison with DC villains like The Riddler, is by Justin Marks, who wrote the aforemenioned He-Man script that’s driving the Internet nuts right now.Discuss: Is Jonny Quest the next Speed Racer or the next Transformers/Harry Potter? Is Segal a smart choice?

Could Green Arrow be the next Iron Man?
